How to set up Google Tag Manager (GTM) and install your custom script

Created by Andrew Jot, Modified on Fri, 31 Jul at 2:55 PM by Andrew Jot

This guide explains how to create a new Google Tag Manager (GTM) container so you can add and manage a custom script on your website.

1. Open Google Tag Manager

Go to Google Tag Manager and sign in with your Google account.

Open Google Tag Manager

If you already have Google Tag Manager set up for another website, you can still create a new container for this website.

2. Create a New Account

If you don't already have a GTM account:

  1. Click Create Account.
  2. Enter your Account Name — usually your business or dealership name.
  3. Select your Country.
  4. Enter your Container Name — usually your website name or domain.
  5. Under Target platform, select Web.
  6. Click Create.
  7. Accept the Google Tag Manager Terms of Service.

Your new GTM container will then be created.

3. Find Your GTM Container ID

Once the container has been created, you'll be taken to the GTM workspace.

Your Container ID will look something like:

GTM-XXXXXXX

You can find it at the top of the Google Tag Manager screen.

Please send us this GTM Container ID so we can confirm the correct container before proceeding.

4. Add a Custom Script

Once your GTM container is ready:

  1. In the left-hand menu, click Tags.
  2. Click New.
  3. Click Tag Configuration.
  4. Select the appropriate tag type for your script.
  5. Enter or paste the custom script provided to you.
  6. Under Triggering, select when the script should run.
    • For a script that should run across the entire website, this will typically be All Pages.
  7. Click Save.

Important: Please don't publish the changes yet unless you have been instructed to do so.

5. Submit / Publish the Changes

Once the script has been added and you're ready to make it live:

  1. Click Submit in the top-right corner.
  2. Enter a name for the change, such as Added custom script.
  3. Click Publish.

The script will then be active on your website based on the trigger you selected.

Quick Navigation

For reference, the main navigation is:

Google Tag Manager → Select Container → Tags → New → Tag Configuration → Add Script → Triggering → Save → Submit → Publish

If you are setting up GTM specifically so that we can add a custom script, please contact support@dealerstudio.com.au and provide us with the GTM Container ID (e.g. GTM-XXXXXXX) once the container has been created.
